How Tongits Works — A Quick Refresher

Deal the Cards

Each of the three players is dealt 12 cards at the start (the dealer gets 13). The remaining cards form the central draw pile — the stock.

Draw and Discard

On your turn, draw from the stock or take the top discard. Then discard one card face-up. The goal is to form melds — sets (three or four cards of the same rank) or runs (three or more consecutive cards of the same suit).

Lay Down Your Melds

Once you have a valid meld, you can lay it on the table. You can also add (sapaw) cards to other players' exposed melds to reduce your hand size. Timing this right can flip a losing position.

Win by Tongits or Fight

Empty your hand completely and call Tongits — instant win. Alternatively, if you're confident you have the lowest points remaining, call a fight (laban). The player with the lowest unmelded point total wins.

Stock Runs Out

If the stock pile empties and nobody has called Tongits or a fight, the player who drew the last card from the stock wins automatically. This means managing your draws carefully matters throughout the game.

Card Point Values

In Tongits, face cards (Jack, Queen, King) are worth 10 points each. Number cards are worth their face value. Aces are worth 1 point. The lower your unmelded point total, the better your position when someone calls a fight. Managing your deadwood — cards you can't meld yet — is half the strategy.

Prioritise Low Point Cards Early

In the first few rounds, try to discard high-value unmelded cards — Jacks, Queens, Kings — before someone calls a fight and your 10-point deadwood cards cost you the round.

Watch What Other Players Discard

Keep mental notes of what's been thrown away. If both 7♠ and 7♦ are already in the discard pile, chasing a 7-set for your meld is a waste of time. Adjust your target melds accordingly.

Use Sapaw (Adding to Melds) Tactically

Sapaw lets you add cards to any player's exposed melds. Use it to dump cards you can't build your own melds with. Dumping a King onto an opponent's King set clears 10 points from your hand in one move.

Don't Call a Fight Too Early

Calling a fight when you think you have low points is a gamble. If another player has an even lower count, you lose. Only call a fight when you're confident — or when the stock is running low and you have no better option.

Aim for Tongits When Possible

A clean Tongits win — emptying your entire hand — beats a fight win every time. If you're close to going out completely, prioritise drawing the right card over reducing your count by one.
